Things to do in the Lake District in April!

Jo Spencer - Friday, March 04, 2016

April is one of our favourite months in the Lake District! Spring has well and truly arrived and we’ve dusted off the winter darkness. The evenings are getting lighter and visitors are soaking up the Spring sunshine outside café’s, bars and restaurants! It’s when the Lakes really starts to come alive! Eating and drinking aside (!), there is an abundance of activities available during April for those with every type of interest. Here’s our take on the best of what’s on:

Name an Easter chick at Rheged!

Pay a visit to Rheged until Sunday 10th April and explore the centre with their free Easter trail. Witness the Easter eggs hatch in an incubator full of eggs in their toy shop, courtesy of the Lakes Free Range egg company! You can even help with naming the chicks, with the best name winning a £10 gift voucher!

Celebrate Beatrix Potter’s birthday!

Celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter, with a visit to Allan Bank, Grasmere, before Sunday 10th April and discover the origins of the tale of Peter Rabbitt! Did you know that if it wasn’t for Canon Rawnsley, you may never have heard of Peter Rabbit? The tale of Peter Rabbit started out as an illustrated letter, but Canon Rawnsley saw promise in it and encouraged Beatrix Potter to get her tale published. He even tried to help when she was struggling to find a willing publisher by re-writing her story in-verse!

Beginners Rock Climbing!

For those desperate to get out on the mountains but are reticent, this one day Beginners' rock climbing course is ideal! The course is for anyone who has never climbed or has only climbed indoors. You’ll have the opportunity to try a number of different climbs that can be as hard or easy as you like!
The instructors will demonstrate how to tie onto the rope correctly and how to ‘belay’ (i.e. hold the rope while someone else climbs and lower them back down again.) At the end of the day, there will also be the chance to have a go at abseiling!
No prior experience is needed for this day - just lots of enthusiasm to try something different! Date: from 16th April.

Hanging out at the newly opened Fizzy Tarté:

By April, our newest venture, The Fizzy Tarté, will be well and truly open and we’ll be treating our customers to a new experience in Bowness. A modern café and champagne bar, with patisserie, The Fizzy Tarté will go BIG on style! We’re going to be tempting you with delicious concoctions, fabulous fizz and creative cocktails!  The Fizzy Tarté is going to specialise in deliciously decadent and original drinks served in a modern and imaginative environment, with cool music and lighting. So, we’re envisaging cocktails in the sun on our fabulous terrace throughout April, watching the world go by!
