Do you remember the 21st night of September?...

Emily Hadfield - Thursday, August 11, 2016

Although this article is not a tribute to the legendary American R&B group that is Earth, Wind & Fire (shame), the group HAS got us wondering, how can we make our September a little more interesting? Here in The Lake District, September is an unusual month, where the height of the summer season comes to an end, and the majority of holiday makers gradually start making their way home. However, it is a month which has been known to grace us with surprisingly good weather (for The Lakes), leaving our little village in a state of autumn bliss. Therefore, if you want to remember “dancing in September” (last EW&F reference, I promise), fear not, as there are a number of events happening in The Lake District that are guaranteed to give you a dose of fun and excitement this September.

After sampling the many delights and activities on offer in Bowness-on-Windermere and Windermere village, why not venture further afield and experience a taste of what the locals enjoy. From lantern festivals to jazz gigs, there is an event for every preference.

Friday 9th September 2016 - Kendal Torchlight Festival 2016

The Kendal Torchlight Festival is a firm favourite amongst locals and tourists alike, often attracting over 25,000 people from all over the country. It is one the largest one-day events in The Lake District and Cumbria. The carnival and traditional procession aims to promote and exhibit 'the best of Kendal', plus, it enables the chosen charities to raise tens of thousands of pounds towards their worthy causes.

The 2016 Torchlight carnival and parade will begin at 7.30pm on the 9th of September (Kendal's streets will start closing to incoming and outgoing traffic from around 6.30pm, to be reopened at approximately 10.30 pm). The following afternoon, the carnival organisers will be hosting a street party in Kendal town centre with attractions such as carnival performances, a dance stage and a samba workshop. Be prepared for a spectacle of colour, creativity and energy.
