Always book directly

Graham Hadaway - Monday, March 11, 2013

With the rising popularity of online booking agents like lastminute.com and booking.com, more and more of us are making bookings through these websites to secure accommodation.

There are many disadvantages to using sites such as these. We guarantee that it’s much better to ‘phone where you would like to stay and book it directly with them. Here are the salient reasons why:

Bookings and Cancellations

When booking directly, you may be asked to pay a small deposit. However, when you book through third party booking sites, you may be asked to pay for the entire cost up front.

Cancellation policies can also vary when you book directly or through a site like laterooms.com. Often, they can be very restrictive, and result in a hefty charge. However, cancelling or amending your direct booking can be a lot more flexible. A simple call to your chosen hotel, bed and breakfast or guest house will usually work wonders when you wish to make a change to your booking.

Which room will I be allocated?

When you use a site like booking.com, rooms are graded according to certain categories, and you simply chose the one you wish to stay in.

At The Cranleigh Boutique, each room is different and, because individuality is our specialty, we don’t fit into a room grading system. So, it’s better to book direct, request a specific room and explain your requirements. You are much more likely to have your demands met if you have personally asked in advance.

'Best Price' guarantee?

Many establishments use this phrase, but what does it mean and who is most likely to adhere to it?

It means that whoever you are booking with guarantees that they are offering the best rate. However, this isn’t always strictly true and you may be able to search around and find different rates. Do be mindful that although you may have found a cheaper rate, it might not include everything. Sometimes, you may think you have found a deal but on arriving at the hotel, discover that something crucial to you is not included, such as breakfast!

Your Hotel, B&B or Guest House will always price match any price you find as they would much rather cut out the middle man and the commission they have to pay to these third party booking sites.
